Listen: Radio Today interview about orienteering

Community radio station Radio Today host Elaine Thorne interviewed Michael Crone and Lisa de Speville about the sport of orienteering and Michael’s WOC 2012 achievement. The pre-recorded show went out on Wednesday, 29 August 2012 on the Our Community Voice show, which is specifically for the I Love Kensington Association.

Michael Crone is a Kensington resident and he is the first South African to reach the finals of the World Orienteering Championships which were held in Switzerland in July 2012. Lisa de Speville is the Expansion Plan Project Manager for South African Orienteering.

Michael made comment in the Joburg East Express “Orienteering is the ultimate challenge because you race against yourself. It takes up a lot of mental strength. One competitor who was a world champion gave up after making a few mistakes. This shows that you need mental strength to compete. Someone once told me to focus on the process and not the end result. This is what I try to do. I think people should get involved in this sport because of the test of physical and mental strength. You also meet a lot of people and go to places in the outdoors that you would otherwise seldom get to go to.”

Orienteering is governed by the International Orienteering Federation and is recognised by the International Olympic Committee.
