The SAOF has an updated Development Plan for 2013-2016, and beyond. As well as describing on-going projects like those mentioned below, the plan contains a detailed description of our Expansion Plan that aims to establish orienteering in more provinces in South Africa.
The development of orienteers is a priority of SAOF. Our Young Orienteers Challenge, introduced in 2009, caters to developing skills and enthusiasm for the sport of orienteering in pre-teen children.
The Gauteng Schools League, established in 2001, is an annual five-week inter-school challenge, held in February & March. It culminates in a final event. The Gauteng Schools League events are aimed at Grade 8 to 12 pupils. The SAOF is keen to export this Schools League concept to other provinces.
We invest a lot of time into developing our Junior Squad and Team through regular training events and weekends to prepare them for the Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC).
