The SAOF commissions the annual National Championships. For a number of years these are held at the end of September and the SAOF executive would like to see this continue. The events have previously coincided with the long weekend created by the Heritage Day holiday (24th September). Traditionally the SA Orienteering Championships have consisted of three events over the course of the weekend. These are: 1) a Middle distance event 2) a Long distance event 3) a Relay. The hosting of the national championships has traditionally alternated between the Gauteng clubs and PenOC in the western Cape.
In 2010 the SAOF initiated a national Sprint orienteering championship. Once again it is envisaged that, for the foreseeable future, this event will be alternately hosted by PenOC and the Gauteng clubs. Results of recent SA Championships can be accessed from the Results tab. It is envisaged that into the future the Sprint Championship will be hosted by a club in a different region to the club hosting the national championship.
Affiliated clubs are invited to apply to host the national championships. Please follow the link below to download the application form with guidelines.
The SAOF would like to see all national championships have World Ranking Event status. A link to the WRE guidelines on the IOF website is included above.
