Sarah to Represent SA at World Games 2025

The SAOF is very excited to announce that Sarah Wimberley (PenOC) has been selected to represent South Africa at the World Games in 2025. Orienteering has once again been included in the World Games program. Sarah’s selection was made by the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) according their World Games qualification rules, and was based on Sarah’s performances at the 2024 World Orienteering Championships held in Edniburgh, Scotland. There will be three Orienteering events at the World Games, a Sprint, a Middle and a Mixed Relay. Sarah will compete in the Sprint and Middle distance events. Sarah will be travelling as part of Team SA. The whole Orienteering community in South Africa wishes Sarah the best of luck in her World Games adventure.

The World Games takes place this year from 7-17 August in Chengdu, China. The Orienteering events will take place between the dates of 8-12 August. More information is available on the World Games website. https://www.theworldgames2025.com/en

Expedition Africa becomes an Associate Member of the SAOF

Expedition Africa becomes and Associate Member of the SAOF The SAOF is pleased to announce that Expedition Africa has been granted Associate Member status of the South African Orienteering Federation (SAOF).

On 24 November 2022, the SAOF received an application from Expedition Africa to become an Associate Member of the SAOF. After due consideration the SAOF’s Management Committee approved Expedition Africa’s application.

There is synergy between the sports of Orienteering and Adventure Racing since both rely heavily on navigation with map and compass. We believe this affiliation will benefit both sports and is aligned with the aim of the SAOF, which is to promote orienteering in South Africa.

In 2010 Kinetic Events was created, organising adventure races under the brand name Expedition Africa. Over more than a decade Expedition Africa has organised more than 60 events of 25 km, 40 events of 120 – 250 km and 12 multi-day Expedition races. Their flagship event is the Expedition Africa 500 km, multi-day race which forms part of the Adventure Racing World Series

(ARWS)

Kinetic Events – Expedition Africa was awarded the rights to host the Adventure Racing World Championship in 2023. The race will be the 18th Adventure Racing World Championship, and the first to be held on the African continent.

Orienteering Schools League 2023

We invite schools in Gauteng to join the 2023 Orienteering Schools League (OSL). Read the full details on the working of the league in OSL 2023 Document Oct 2022. Top performers at the league have a chance of representing South Africa at the Junior World Championships in Romania in July 2023.

The league is run by experienced orienteers from ROC and RACO.

Gauteng Bush Logs

The first bush logs are now out. Sarah Wimberley is leading the Women’s log from her mother Tania and Margaret Archibald. Nicholas Mulder is way ahead on the Men’s log with four perfect scores. His nearest challengers are upcoming star Matthew Venter-Clelland and old warhorse with a gammy knee Paul Wimberley. Click on the events tab to see the full lists.

Interesting New Orienteering at The Campus

ROC added a new feature at last Sunday’s event at The Campus. Alex Pope mapped a section of the underground parking. The parking was shown as a separate map next to the main map. Several people were caught out when they got to the transition point. Mainly because they had not read the event noticeboard!

Tim Chambers and Michele Botha cruised to victory in the men’s and women’s events while mother and daughter Tania and Sarah dead-heated for second. Alex plans to map the rest of the parking, so maybe we will have the first totally underground orienteering event!

Urban Series 2 – Wits Main Campus

Join us at Wits University for the second sprint event. The event sheet is HERE.

Orienteering is a competitive form of land navigation. It is for all ages and degrees of fitness & skill. It
provides the suspense and excitement of a treasure hunt. The object of orienteering is to
locate control points by using a map and compass to navigate through the area.

Additional members to the 2018 National Squads Announced
