The SAOF is pleased to announce a Level 1 Mapping Course to be held at Delta Park in Johannesburg. The event will take place on the 4th of December 2010 at the Scout Hall in Camp Delta. More details and directions are available on the information sheet.
The aim of the course is to equip participants with the confidence and skills to enable them to survey simple areas suitable for introductory and intermediate events, e.g. schools & parks. This could be the first step into the interesting and fulfilling world of map-making, which could lead ultimately to the ability to make the high-quality maps required for world-ranking orienteering events. It is also well-known that making orienteering maps will lead to improved orienteering performance. After all you can’t make a good orienteering map if you don’t understand the basic rules of feature interpretation and representation. And once you understand these aspects it will help you make sense of other orienteering maps.
Equipping more people with the skills to make basic orienteering maps is in line with the SAOF’s development goals in which we seek to introduce more schools to the sport of orienteering (follow this link for more). In orienteering our maps are our playgrounds. So with more maps we have more playgrounds and hence the facilities to introduce more people to the sport.
The course will be presented by Nicholas Mulder and Paul Wimberley, both highly experienced orienteers and mappers.
Course attendees who go on to produce an orienteering map of a school or park of a sufficient standard will be awarded with SAOF Level 1 Mapping accreditation.
