The training event held at Krugersdorp High School on Monday afternoon was a superb warm-up for the 2014 Orienteering Schools League (OSL). Krugersdorp High has been involved with OSL for a few years now and they jump in to get involved with every event. We’re delighted to announce the first Urban Series of events. The first one happens at Jeppe High School for Boys on Sunday, 2 February 2014 – the series continues with nine events over February, March and April.

Colours Criteria for Orienteering
The following criteria are recommended for setting Full and Half Colours.
Full colours

Awarded to any Junior orienteer who qualifies for Full Colours if competing on the Senior log
Team colours/Team Tie
Awarded to any athletes who:
Certificate of Merit
These may be awarded to any participating athlete who didn’t qualify for colours but is worthy of an award and can be in recognition for ‘Dedication & Commitment’ or ‘Participation’.
Note:
Attendance of meetings and practices differs for each school.
For practices, 75-80% is typical but this depends on prior commitments at the school. For meetings a minimum of 80% needs to be attended, preferably 100% (one could miss out on the training session but missing a meeting can be detrimental to one’s log score).
The South African Orienteering Federation (SAOF) put their sport development grants from the National Lottery Development Trust Fund (NLDTF) and the Department of Sport and Recreation into good use to bring a group of students from Polokwane, and their teacher, to the Big 5 O event. This is an international five-day orienteering event, held every two years, and this year it took place mostly in the forests surrounding Kaapsehoop and in Nelspruit. (more…)
This was the second year that we implemented an application process for the senior and junior squads. The SAOF Selection Committee was again impressed by the content of the applications received. It points to some highly competitive and exciting orienteering in 2014 and beyond.

The 2014 National Selection documents have been released by the SAOF. The documents include a handbook summary of the selection and High Performance strategy for 2014.
The handbook contains information for elite high performance athletes for the year ahead and beyond. It covers information for Senior, Junior and Youth orienteers. It includes information about selection to squads, and to various teams and tour groups. It details the selection process, the selection criteria, your responsibilities and the benefits.
Please note that interested athletes need to apply for membership of the Senior and Junior squads in 2014. Only members of one of the SAOF squads can represent the SAOF at world-class competitions and make use of the various training and other benefits provided by the squad. The details and the application form can be found in the handbook.
Potential youth squad members do not need to apply with this form, as the selectors will do a direct selection from eligibile orienteers around the country for this squad.
Please note that the cut-off date for application for the Senior and Junior squad is 15 December 2013.

The SAOF selection committee is pleased to advise that Brian Gardner will be participating in the 2nd round of the MTBO world cup in Sweden in July 2014.
This is the first time that we will have a South Africa in a World Cup MTBO event and we wish Brian well in his preparation for and participation in the events.
The competition takes the form of 3 different disciplines, being a middle distance, sprint and long distance race. ”
On Sunday at the Mountain Bike Orienteering (MTBO) event at Van Gaalens – presented by Adventure Racing Club – there were well over 50 people out riding. Of these, there were about 15 absolute-complete novices. This is the best turn out at an MTBO for a number of years, which we hope is an encouraging sign for future growth. Unfortunately the date clashed with the Kinetic Adventure sprint; next year there won’t be clashes with adventure racing events, so we hope the numbers pick up. (more…)
