Limpopo’s Orienteering team came close to snatching a victory at the National Orienteering Championships in North West recently where they won silver in their category.
The team also managed to claim top positions in the Light Green categories, however there are no rewards in this class.
Team Limpopo failed to defend the title they won in 2015 in the long course category to Gauteng.
They obtained position two and four in long course and position four and five in middle course.
According to the Provincial Orienteering Development Officer, Ephraim Chuene, the performance displayed by local athletes at the nationals obliged the South African Orienteering Federation to host the International Orienteering Championships in Limpopo.
The tournament is expected to start some time in December until January 2018.
Orienteering is described as a family sport that requires navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain, and normally moving at speed.
“The orienteering board appreciated the effort team Limpopo put into the sport and honoured us by granting the province an opportunity to host an international tournament,” he said.
He is the senior coach at the Polokwane Orienteering Club and a South Africa level one coach. As the provincial development officer, Chuene has to oversee everything in the province and assist other coaches to understand the sport better and promote players. Three local players were selected to be part of the National Orienteering Squad after impressing the scouts at the national tourney, they are: Lesedi Chuene, Tebatso Ramodike, and the sport’s mastermind, Ephraim Chuene. He pointed out Male o/21 21 Elite (M21E) as one of the toughest courses in the sport, and explained that it requires someone who is fit and can run fast on hills and rocks. This is a 21 km course and needs certain techniques for an athlete to excel.
Chuene encouraged young people to join the sport to enjoy the fun of walking and running through forests and fields.

The IOF has announced the launch of their new external web platform, LIVE Orienteering. LIVE Orienteering is a replacement and upgrade of the IOF Livecenter which has been used for streaming of live video, GPS tracking and results from IOF major events.
In addition LIVE Orienteering is will become the primary platform for IOF external communications and orienteering fan engagement, and a portal for orienteering news and discussions. In this launch version of the site you will see that IOF external news articles are displayed and that the site integrates social media content. Through cooperation with worldofo.com, LIVE Orienteering also displays blog content and news sources from around the orienteering world. The site also integrates advertising opportunities where the income will be used to fund IOF activities. Congratulations to Ricky Raine from Penoc who has been awarded Honorary Membership of SAOF in recognition of his meritorious services over very many years to SAOF and to orienteering in South Africa.
Ricky began orienteering in South Africa in 1985, and became a member of PENOC soon after. He has always been, and remains still, a regular competitor and excellent orienteer, as well as a valued and respected member of his Club. He has always been unstinting of his time and energies, and has given these in all aspects of the sport of orienteering, including administration at all levels, planning, controlling, mapping, organizing, and helping in all ways at events from starts and finishes to collecting controls and packing up. He has been Planner and Controller of several major orienteering events, including the South African and Western Cape Championships.
Ricky served as a member of the Management Committee of SAOF from 2003 to 2009, seeking (apart from his other duties) to represent the interests of the Western Cape. He was a PENOC Committee Member from 1998 until early 2016. He was the Chairman of PENOC from 2000 until 2004, and again in 2014.
At times orienteering in the Western Cape has suffered from having only one active club, and a limited number of capable persons and volunteers to stage orienteering events. Ricky has stepped into the breach on countless occasions over the years, sometimes personally putting on as many as four events in a single year, in addition to his other contributions to the sport outlined above. Ricky has played a major and pivotal role in the continuance of orienteering in the Cape.
Well done Ricky, now we know we’ll be seeing you for many more years in the forests.
